Three steps of preparation: 
- Identification of strengths and weaknesses of the child. To create a personal profile of the child, a developmental perspective is used. This means that areas such as communication, play, emotional regulation, cognitive development and behavior problems are all assessed.
- Prioritizing goals, based on the child’s developmental level and family’s needs.
- Planning practice opportunities with peers and significant others.
Learning strategies:
- Breaking down a skill into smaller units. Teaching each unit at a time, using child’s strengths.
- Playing pre-planned games and activities, tailored to meet the child’s needs. Working on the goals set with the parents.
- Role playing and modeling are frequently used.
- Teaching through successes, using positive reinforcements.
- Ongoing meetings with parents to review goals, strategies, and problem solving on a regular basis.
- Practice, practice, and some more practice.
