Three steps of preparation:

  1. Identification of strengths and weaknesses of the child. To create a personal profile of the child, a developmental perspective is used. This means that areas such as communication, play, emotional regulation, cognitive development and behavior problems are all assessed.
  2. Prioritizing goals, based on the child’s developmental level and family’s needs.
  3. Planning practice opportunities with peers and significant others.

Learning strategies:

  • Breaking down a skill into smaller units. Teaching each unit at a time, using child’s strengths.
  • Playing pre-planned games and activities, tailored to meet the child’s needs. Working on the goals set with the parents.
  • Role playing and modeling are frequently used.
  • Teaching through successes, using positive reinforcements.
  • Ongoing meetings with parents to review goals, strategies, and problem solving on a regular basis.
  • Practice, practice, and some more practice.
